After spending three years building a V6 petrol Toyota Prado from the ground up, it was time for James Stewart to upgrade to something a bit bigger. James originally was on the look out for a chopped Toyota 80 Series, but had no luck finding one that fitted his needs. His next build had to have dual coil suspension so his other option was a Nissan GU Patrol ute which he bought off a farm hand and got straight onto modifying. He took large amounts of inspiration from competition trucks but also wanted to keep the ute somewhat practical for camping and carrying loads on the tray. James and his dad actually built the tray in their garage, partially using the factory tray as well as other bits and pieces.
You’re a second year apprentice under body technician at ARB, how has that helped with building this Patrol?
Working at ARB has definitely helped a huge amount with not only the knowledge of four wheel drives but to have a workshop to spend countless hours in working on your pride and joy. The guys down at ARB Brookvale are very experienced with 4wds and learning from them has always been a good experience, plus having the knowledge myself to pull apart the whole car and put it back together always helps.
What mods have you done to the Patrol?
It has a full Superior Engineering 4 inch lift kit with all the fruit, its running 12.5 inch shocks in the rear with 10.5 inch in the front. It also has the hybrid radius arms that work a treat to make that front end really move around, the tray is a factory Nissan tray that I cut down and modified. When I first bought the car I always wanted it to look like a comp truck and I think I did pretty well at doing that. It’s good off-road but always has enough room for long trips. As for bar work it has the ARB deluxe bar and Millweld rocksliders, I also run Superior Engineering diff guards and radiator guard. I have a 52 inch light bar across the windscreen with little flood lights above it on the roof racks. I'm running a Fatz engineering 4 inch stainless steel snorkel with the air box and 4 inch intake, as well as a 3 inch exhaust and a 4 inch dump pipe out the side of the cabin.
