While in Tasmania, Sunday Garage caught up with Jack to check out his 1993 Suzuki Sierra and take it out for the day. Jack is a marine diesel mechanic by trade but is also extremely handy working on just about anything with an engine.
Jack lives the dream in Tassie, with a shed full of incredible classic Japanese four wheel drives. However his 1993 Suzuki Sierra caught our eye and we wanted to find out more about this project.
“When it comes to off-roading, the right vehicle makes all the difference. After witnessing heavier cars struggle and sink in soft terrain, I decided to start my project with a Suzuki. Following a thorough search and ownership of a few Sierras, I finally chose a 1993 SJ70 soft top as my base.”
“The body modifications on my 1993 Suzuki Sierra have been a labor of love. I started by grafting the front grill from an '82 Sierra, giving it a distinctive, classic look that really stands out. Then, I removed the flares and welded up the holes, streamlining the bodywork for a cleaner, more polished appearance.
To enhance its ruggedness, I cut down the doors to create half doors, adding an open-air feel that's perfect for off-road adventures. Finally, I replaced the original target bar with a homemade roll bar, significantly boosting safety and durability. These modifications not only improve the Sierra's aesthetics but also enhance its off-road performance, making it a truly unique and capable vehicle.”
“Mechanically, I've added some key upgrades to make it more off-road ready. I installed a rear ARB air locker for better traction and fitted the transfer case with reduction gears to handle rough terrain better. I also put in a snorkel for those deep water crossings, keeping the engine safe and dry.
To prevent overheating, I added a viscous fan, which helps protect the radiator. Plus, I mounted a winch to the homemade bull bar, perfect for any recovery situations that come up. These tweaks have really boosted the Sierra's performance and reliability, making it a solid companion for any off-road adventure.”
“For tyres and rims, she's running on 16x4.5 steel wheels with 600x16 cross plies with tubes. I've been told they aren't the best choice, but when I go out with the 4WD club, the guys running radials seem to have endless trouble. With the tubes, I can run the tyres down to 5 psi without any issues.”
“Future plans include adding a front air locker, rebuilding the dashboard, and creating a new wiring harness. I also plan to harden the body with built-in rock sliders and thicker rear quarter panels.
Although she is a bit cold to drive in the Tassie winters, she’s a dream bush basher and a fun daily drive.”
